Vibraphonist Bobby Hutcherson was a key figure in the sound of Blue Note Records in the 1960s, equally at home in hard bop, soul jazz, and avant-garde settings. His 1968 album, Total Eclipse, was the first recording to feature tenor saxophonist and flutist Harold Land, who became an important collaborator in the years that followed. Hutcherson and Land led a West Coast band and came to New York for performances at Slugs’ Saloon and the Village Vanguard before heading to Plaza Sound Studio to record the album. The band was rounded out by pianist Chick Corea, bassist Reggie Johnson, and Hutcherson’s favorite drummer Joe Chambers on this passionate and exploratory post-bop set. With the exception of Corea’s outstanding composition “Matrix,” the rest of the program consists of Hutcherson’s compositions, including the confident and brisk opener “Herzog” and the epic closer “Pompeian,” which moves between a gentle, light waltz and more turbulent explorations. This stereo Tone Poet Vinyl Edition release was produced by Joe Harley, mastered by Kevin Gray (Cohearent Audio) from the original analog master tapes, pressed on 180g vinyl at Record Technology Inc. (RTI), and packaged in a deluxe gatefold tip-on jacket.
