Maria João Pires

Maria João Pires is a Portuguese pianist born in Lisbon in 1944. She gained international fame in 1970 by winning the Beethoven Competition in Brussels. Pires is renowned for her interpretations of works by composers such as Mozart, Beethoven, Schubert, and Chopin. Notable recordings include "Chopin: The Nocturnes" released in 1996. She has collaborated with major orchestras and conductors worldwide. In 2021, Pires received the Beethoven Prize for her music projects in social contexts and the Partitura project aimed at young artists.
